blood flow restriction
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training is a training strategy involving the use of cuffs placed around a limb during exercise, to maintain arterial inflow to the muscle while preventing venous return. This technique combines low intensity exercise and training loads with blood flow occlusion that produces similar results to high intensity training.
Programs of resistance training with BFR and low training loads (normally 20-30% of one-repetition max) can increase strength in the particular target muscles. BFR can be used as a way of reducing pain at lower intensities of load, while maintaining and potentially increasing muscle bulk, without the risk of joint overload.
This training technique is becoming very popular with elite athletes and sporting associations to speed up recovery and increase strength in target muscles.
